Just in the middle of watching The Police documentary from 1980 that follows them on a Far-Eastern on tour…..this quote from Stuart Copeland struck me because it’s 31 years later and really not much has changed! Talking about why his band previous to The Police didn’t work out:
“It was a band that was contaminated by the music industry. The two albums I did were both rejected by the record company, and when you’ve spent £20k on recording an album only to have it rejected by a guy wearing a business suit who doesn’t know anything about music……because it sounds too rough, or because it’s too quirky, or well basically because it can’t get on the radio, then it makes you very paranoid when you’re writing music and working in the studio - the record that you make has to be something that they can play on the radio and there’s no room for taking any chance or for doing anything really artistic. It’s entirely commercial gain.”
